TL;DR: Sony just raised PS5 prices in multiple regions, citing inflation and currency woes. Meanwhile, gamers are left wondering why the “challenging economic environment” only ever seems to challenge their wallets.
Another Price Jump for the PS5
Sony is once again increasing the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, marking the second major hike since the console’s original launch. According to IGN, the company blames “a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates” for the decision.
Effective April 14, 2025, here are the updated price points:
- Europe: PS5 Digital Edition now costs €499.99 (up from €449.99)
- UK: PS5 Digital Edition rises to £429.99 (previously £389.99)
- Australia:
- Standard PS5: AUD $829.95
- Digital Edition: AUD $749.95 (a $100 hike!)
- New Zealand:
- Standard PS5: NZD $949.95
- Digital Edition: NZD $859.95
Meanwhile, the PS5 Pro remains untouched by this round of price increases—for now.
Inflation, Tariffs, and a Shrinking Wallet
Sony may be pointing fingers at inflation, but broader trade tensions may also be playing a part. Recent U.S. tariffs on Chinese electronics—some as high as 145%—have sent ripples through global manufacturing and supply chains. While consoles like the PS5 have been temporarily exempted, the looming uncertainty may be affecting pricing strategies worldwide. Windows Central noted that even exempt items may eventually see cost increases due to rising production costs and disrupted supply chains.
According to The Guardian, Sony has been forced to pass on some of these costs to consumers—especially in regions with weaker currencies or less favorable import conditions.
Small Consolation: Discounts Elsewhere
Not all the news is bad, though. Sony has also dropped the price of its standalone disc drive accessory, which now costs £69.99 in the UK (down from £99.99), according to The Verge.
Some retailers are trying to soften the blow. For example, Argos in the UK is offering a PS5 Astro Bot bundle for the same price as the new Digital Edition—£429.99—which includes both a game and a disc drive. It’s a small gesture, but for frustrated players, every bonus helps.
What It Means for Gamers
If you’re in one of the affected regions, now might be the time to either buy a bundle or wait for used hardware to hit the resale market. With the PS5 Pro on the horizon, Sony’s pricing strategy is likely to continue evolving. And if the economy doesn’t stabilize—or if trade wars escalate—you might want to brace yourself for future sticker shock.
Or, as one Spanish outlet put it, “Para vosotros, jugadores!” — For you, gamers.
