From the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC’s new chapter, to fresh sci-fi adventures and reboots of cult classics, the year is packed with exciting genre releases. Below are 18 highly anticipated theatrical sci-fi and superhero films coming in 2025 (in order of release), including brief synopses, release dates, notable cast and directors, and trailer info where available.
Companion – January 2025 (New Line Cinema)
Synopsis: Companion is a twisty sci-fi horror thriller about a weekend getaway that goes horribly wrong when one of the guests turns out not to be what they seem. Set during a remote cabin retreat, the story follows a group of friends who discover a deadly secret involving advanced AI technology (one character is revealed to be a vengeful humanoid robot). What begins as a reunion quickly devolves into chaos and terror as the “companion” seeks bloody revenge.
Release Date: January 31, 2025 (theatrical release by New Line Cinema).
Cast & Director: Sophie Thatcher (from Yellowjackets) stars as the enigmatic companion, alongside Jack Quaid (The Boys) and Lukas Gage. This film marks the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, with Barbarian filmmaker Zach Cregger producing.
Trailer: The official trailer dropped in late 2024, showcasing the film’s blend of sci-fi thriller and horror elements. (Watch the Companion trailer on the studio’s official channels.)
Captain America: Brave New World – February 2025 (Marvel)
Synopsis: The next chapter of the MCU finds Sam Wilson fully embracing the Captain America mantle. In Captain America: Brave New World, Sam (Anthony Mackie) faces a political thriller-style conflict as he teams with the newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford). A global crisis involving a nefarious plot and the theft of a dangerous resource forces Cap to navigate uneasy alliances – including working with President Ross, despite their tense history – to prevent catastrophe. Expect high-flying action and political intrigue, as well as the MCU debut of the Red Hulk (a transformed Ross) teased in early footage.
Release Date: February 14, 2025 (just in time for Presidents’ Day weekend).
Cast & Director: Anthony Mackie returns as Sam Wilson/Captain America, joined by Harrison Ford as President Ross (taking over the role of Ross and poised to become Red Hulk). Carl Lumbly, Danny Ramirez, and Tim Blake Nelson reprise their MCU roles (Isaiah Bradley, Joaquin Torres, and The Leader, respectively). New cast members include Shira Haas as Sabra and Giancarlo Esposito in a mystery role. Julius Onah (director of Luce) directs, with Kevin Feige producing.
Mickey 17 – March 2025 (Warner Bros.)
Synopsis: Mickey 17 is an original science fiction film from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho (Parasite). Based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, it follows Mickey Barnes, a man serving as an “Expendable” on a space colony mission. Each time an Expendable dies on the dangerous mission, a clone is printed with the same memories. The story is set in 2054 on an icy planet called Niflheim, where Mickey (Robert Pattinson) is on his 17th iteration. After a mission gone wrong, Mickey 17 discovers that Mickey 18 has been created, leading to a mind-bending conflict between the two versions of himself and a race to survive when only one Mickey can remain. Expect Bong’s trademark blend of sci-fi, dark humor, and social commentary in this “daffy sci-fi with withering social critique”. See our review of Mickey 17 here.
Release Date: March 7, 2025 (U.S. theatrical release).
Cast & Director: Directed by Bong Joon-ho, the film stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey, alongside a high-profile cast including Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Bong adapts the story from the novel, returning to the sci-fi genre after his earlier film Snowpiercer.
Thunderbolts* – May 2025 (Marvel)
Synopsis: Marvel’s misfit team of antiheroes assembles in Thunderbolts*, which promises a darker, edgier flavor of superhero action. In the wake of the Avengers, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) recruits a covert squad of morally gray characters to undertake a dangerous mission. The Thunderbolts lineup includes Yelena Belova/Black Widow (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) – essentially a “team of Marvel villains-turned-antiheroes” forced to work together. While plot details are under wraps, the film likely involves this ragtag team confronting an even greater evil (rumors hint at the super-powerful Sentry as a villain) in a mission where trust is scarce. Expect Marvel’s Thunderbolts* to deliver intense action and an unpredictable team dynamic as these characters navigate their own agendas.
Release Date: May 2, 2025 (kicking off the summer blockbuster season).
Cast & Director: The ensemble cast features Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, and Harrison Ford (pulling double duty in 2025 as President Ross, who could appear here given his comic connection to the Thunderbolts). Jake Schreier (director of Paper Towns) directs from a screenplay by Eric Pearson, bringing Marvel’s answer to The Suicide Squad to life. Kevin Feige produces.
Trailer: A special look teaser for Thunderbolts* was shown at SDCC 2024, giving a first glimpse of the team in action. An official trailer is expected in early 2025. (Stay tuned to Marvel’s official channels for the Thunderbolts* trailer when it drops.)
Elio – June 2025 (Pixar / Disney)
Synopsis: Pixar ventures into sci-fi comedy with Elio, an animated adventure about an 11-year-old boy who becomes Earth’s ambassador to the galaxy – by accident. Elio Solis is a quirky kid with a big imagination who finds himself beamed up into the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from across the cosmos. Mistaken for the real ambassador of Earth, Elio must prove himself to a council of eccentric aliens and prevent an intergalactic crisis, all while trying to find his way home. The film promises Pixar’s signature heart and humor as Elio forms new friendships with bizarre alien lifeforms and discovers what it truly means to be himself.
Release Date: June 20, 2025 (in theaters).
Cast & Director: This family-friendly science fiction adventure is directed by Pixar veterans Adrian Molina, Domee Shi, and Madeline Sharafian. The voice cast features young actor Yonas Kibreab as Elio, America Ferrera (later replaced by Zoe Saldaña) as his mother, and Jameela Jamil, Brad Garrett, and others as various alien characters. Notably, Zoe Saldaña (no stranger to sci-fi with Guardians of the Galaxy and Avatar) voices Olga, Elio’s mom.
M3GAN 2.0 – June 2025 (Universal)
Synopsis: The killer doll is back for round two. M3GAN 2.0 is the sequel to 2023’s surprise horror-hit M3GAN, this time taking the technothriller concept to an even bigger scale. Set two years after the first film, roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) and her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) are still dealing with the trauma caused by M3GAN’s rampage. Gemma has become a prominent advocate for AI regulation, while teenage Cady chafes under Gemma’s protective rules. Unbeknownst to them, the military has stolen M3GAN’s underlying tech and created a weaponized AI doll named Amelia – a more advanced, combat-ready “sister” to M3GAN. When Amelia goes rogue (no surprise there), Gemma and Cady reluctantly reactivate a rebuilt M3GAN (with a “few upgrades” to make her faster, stronger, and more lethal) to help stop the new threat. Expect more darkly comedic horror mayhem as M3GAN battles Amelia in a showdown of deadly dolls.
Release Date: June 27, 2025 (in theaters).
Cast & Director: Allison Williams and young Violet McGraw return as Gemma and Cady. The sequel introduces Ivanna Sakhno as the voice of Amelia (the militarized AI doll). Screenwriter Akela Cooper is back to pen the script, and the original film’s director, Gerard Johnstone, also returns at the helm. With horror maestros James Wan and Jason Blum producing, M3GAN 2.0 is set to amp up the satirical scares about our fear of unchecked AI.
Jurassic World: Rebirth – July 2025 (Universal)
Synopsis: The Jurassic saga evolves in a bold new direction with Jurassic World: Rebirth. Set five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, this film explores a world where dinosaurs struggle to survive in isolated environments after the global ecological fallout. When an extraction team races to a remote island (once an undisclosedInGen research facility for the original Jurassic Park) to retrieve DNA from the last surviving colossal dinos, they stumble upon terrifying secrets left behind. The story follows Zora Bennett, a skilled covert-ops expert (Scarlett Johansson), who leads the team into the “most dangerous place on Earth” – an island crawling with hostile dinosaurs and remnants of old experiments. They cross paths with a shipwrecked family, and together must face a sinister discovery that’s been hidden for decades. With Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) directing and original Jurassic Parkwriter David Koepp scripting, Rebirth promises intense action and a fresh sci-fi spin – including a quest for a genetic cure hidden in the dinosaurs’ DNA that could save millions of lives.
Release Date: July 2, 2025 (Fourth of July weekend).
Cast & Director: Scarlett Johansson leads the cast as Zora, a tough operative on a top-secret mission. She’s joined by Mahershala Ali as Duncan (Zora’s right-hand man), and Jonathan Bailey as Dr. Henry Loomis, a paleontologist on the team. The supporting cast includes Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Ed Skrein. Notably, the film is directed by Gareth Edwards, known for epic scale in Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One, ensuring the dino action will be suitably awe-inspiring. Steven Spielberg returns as an executive producer.
Superman: Legacy – July 2025 (DC Studios)
Synopsis: Superman: Legacy will relaunch Superman for a new DC Universe under writer-director James Gunn’s vision. This film is both an origin story and a modern reimagining of the Man of Steel. It will follow a young Clark Kent balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, as he begins his career as a reporter in Metropolis and a hero to the world. Gunn has hinted the story draws inspiration from Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman comics, so we may see an optimistic, hopeful Superman confronting contemporary issues. Plot specifics are under wraps, but expect Lex Luthor to loom in the background and the introduction of Clark’s iconic supporting cast (Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, etc.) as he faces his first major challenge. The film will aim to set the tone for Gunn’s interconnected DC universe, making Superman once again the symbol of hope.
Release Date: July 11, 2025. (Notably, this date would have been the late Richard Donner’s birthday, a tribute Gunn acknowledged.)
Cast & Director: David Corenswet dons the cape as the new Superman/Clark Kent, described as capturing the character’s earnest charm. Rachel Brosnahan co-stars as Lois Lane, the star reporter who wins Clark’s heart. The confirmed cast also includes Isabella Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Mister Terrific – indicating Superman will share the screen with other DC heroes. James Gunn is the writer-director, making this the first film in the Gunn-Safran DC era. With Gunn at the helm, fans anticipate a fresh yet faithful take on Superman’s ethos.
Fantastic Four – July 2025 (Marvel)
Synopsis: Marvel’s First Family finally arrives in the MCU with Fantastic Four. While storyline details remain secret, this reboot will introduce Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (The Thing) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given Marvel’s multiverse saga, there’s a chance the Fantastic Four’s origin might involve the Quantum Realm or even a crossover from an alternate universe, but fans can expect the core to remain: a family of scientists gains extraordinary powers after a cosmic incident and must unite to face a world-threatening villain. The film will likely set up the FF’s arch-nemesis, Doctor Doom, or perhaps a cosmic foe like Galactus down the line. Marvel head Kevin Feige has teased that Fantastic Four will be “a pillar” of the MCU going forward. In 2025’s Fantastic Four, we’ll see a fresh dynamic of family, science, and adventure as the foursome establish themselves as heroes.
Release Date: July 25, 2025. (It will cap off a huge month of July for superhero movies.)
Cast & Director: As of late 2024, the cast was heavily rumored and reportedly includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. These casting reports have generated massive excitement, though Marvel has yet to make a formal announcement. The director attached is Matt Shakman (known for WandaVision), who will bring Marvel’s first family to life. With a star-studded cast and Marvel’s resources, Fantastic Four is poised to finally do justice to the iconic team.
The Toxic Avenger – August 2025 (Legendary Entertainment)
Synopsis: Everyone’s favorite hideously deformed superhero from New Jersey returns in The Toxic Avenger, a contemporary reboot of the 1984 cult classic Troma film. This horror-comedy superhero film follows Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage), a meek janitor who, after a horrible toxic waste accident, is transformed into a grotesque mutant with superhuman strength. Armed with a mop and a deformed sense of justice, “Toxie” defends the downtrodden and takes on a corrupt toxic corporation and its army of thugs polluting his city. Expect over-the-top gore, irreverent humor, and satirical jabs at environmental issues and corporate greed – in the spirit of the Troma original but with updated effects. The reboot has been described as a gory, outrageous ride that both pays homage to the 80s B-movie and introduces Toxic Avenger to a new generation.
Release Date: August 29, 2025 (in select theaters). (It’s slated for an unrated theatrical release given its likely extreme content.)
Cast & Director: Peter Dinklage leads as the Toxic Avenger himself (in human and mutated form). He’s joined by an eclectic cast: Kevin Bacon plays the villainous corporate overlord, Elijah Wood is reportedly an evil henchman, and Jacob Tremblay appears as Winston’s son. The film is directed by Macon Blair, who has a knack for dark humor (he appeared in Blue Ruin and directed I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore). Original Toxie co-creator Lloyd Kaufman is involved as a producer, giving his seal of approval to this wild reboot.
Tron: Ares – October 2025 (Disney)
Synopsis: Over a decade after Tron: Legacy, the neon digital world of Tron returns. Tron: Ares is a sequel that takes the franchise in a new direction, as a program from the Grid enters our reality. The story follows Ares, a highly sophisticated program who is suddenly sent from the digital world into the physical human world. This marks humanity’s first encounter with an artificial intelligence being from the Grid, and Ares’ presence sparks a dangerous conflict between humans and digital AIs. We’ll see the collision of Tron’s sleek cyber realm with our modern world, as Ares potentially becomes either a threat to humanity or an unlikely bridge between the two worlds. Expect cutting-edge design and cyber action – light cycles, disc wars – blended into real-world settings, pushing the series’ visual boundaries even further. Director Joachim Rønning has teased that Tron: Ares “builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling” of its predecessors.
Release Date: October 10, 2025.
Cast & Director: Jared Leto stars as Ares, the sentient program protagonist. He’s joined by Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson in unspecified roles (likely a mix of humans and programs). Notably, Jeff Bridges is also confirmed to appear, reprising his role as Kevin Flynn (or Clu) from the previous Tron films – a hint that legacy characters will have a presence. The film is directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), taking over the reins of the stylized sci-fi franchise.

Mortal Kombat 2 – October 2025 (Warner Bros.)
Synopsis: The next tournament begins. Mortal Kombat 2 is the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot, continuing the saga of Earthrealm’s champions fighting to defend their world. Now that the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung has been defeated, a new threat emerges: Emperor Shao Kahn of Outworld prepares to invade Earthrealm after the unsanctioned tournament loss. The sequel will likely adapt the events of the second game, featuring the official Mortal Kombat tournament in Outworld. Expect the introduction of fan-favorite characters like Kitana (the Outworld princess), Sindel, and the malevolent Shao Kahn himself – all of whom have been confirmed in the cast. The heroes – including Cole Young, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage – must venture to Outworld to face new enemies (Kitana’s twisted clone Mileena appeared briefly before, and Noob Saibot is hinted via Bi-Han’s return as a wraith). With promises of even more visceral martial arts fights, signature fatalities, and supernatural showdowns, Mortal Kombat 2 aims to satisfy fans with a bigger, bolder tournament.
Release Date: October 24, 2025.
Cast & Director: Returning cast members include Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Chin Han (Shang Tsung), and Joe Taslim (Bi-Han, who becomes Noob Saibot). Newcomers join as iconic fighters: Karl Urban suits up as Hollywood star-turned-brawler Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph plays Princess Kitana, and Tati Gabrielle is Jade. Also notably cast are Martyn Ford as the imposing Shao Kahn and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel. Director Simon McQuoid returns, ensuring continuity in style and tone. With a script by Jeremy Slater, this sequel is primed to deliver the next brutal chapter of the Mortal Kombat saga.
Trailer: No trailer yet, but Warner Bros. revealed first-look images in late 2024, including Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage and a tantalizing peek at Shao Kahn’s armor. Expect a trailer by summer 2025, packed with fan-service moments (the signature shout of “Finish him!” will surely make an appearance). The Mortal Kombat 2 trailer will likely drop online via WB’s channels.
Predator: Badlands – November 2025 (20th Century Studios)
Synopsis: The Predator saga continues with a bold new setting and storyline in Predator: Badlands. Set in the future on a distant planet, the film follows a young Yautja (Predator) outcast named Dek who teams up with a human woman, Thia, to undertake a treacherous quest for the ultimate prey. Banished by his clan for being a runt, Dek finds an unlikely ally in Thia – an android created by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation (a cool nod to the Alien franchise). Together, they navigate a hostile alien landscape (nicknamed the “Death Planet”) in search of a legendary beast that even Predators fear to hunt. The tagline “First Hunt. Last Chance.” suggests this is Dek’s final opportunity to prove himself. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (who helmed 2022’s acclaimed Prey), Badlands is set to expand the Predator lore with new concepts – including Predator society and tech – while delivering the intense action and suspense the series is known for. Expect brutal Predator-on-Predator fights (the teaser shows Dek battling another Predator) and a surprising connection to the Alien universe via Weyland-Yutani’s involvement.
Release Date: November 7, 2025 (in theaters, including IMAX).
Cast & Director: Elle Fanning stars as Thia, the android who partners with the young Predator. Newcomer Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi plays Dek, the outcast Predator (in suit and voice). Dan Trachtenberg, who won praise for reinvigorating the franchise with Prey, directs and co-wrote the script. With Trachtenberg’s experience and the return of franchise producer John Davis, Badlands aims to satisfy long-time fans and sci-fi action lovers alike.

Avatar: Fire and Ash – December 2025 (20th Century Studios)
Synopsis: James Cameron’s next epic arrives with Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in the Avatar saga. This chapter will take us back to Pandora, but to a whole new region and culture of the Na’vi. As the title suggests, Fire and Ash introduces the Ash People – a tribe of Na’vi who live in the volcanic regions of Pandora. Unlike the reef-dwelling Metkayina clan from The Way of Water, the Ash People are said to be an “aggressive, volcanic race” of Na’vi who may not be as harmonious with nature. The story will continue with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) likely encountering this new tribe amid escalating conflict with the human colonizers. After the events of the last film, the RDA (Resources Development Administration) is still intent on exploiting Pandora – and possibly, Pandora’s new element introduced here (Cameron hinted each sequel focuses on a different element: water for 2, fire for 3). Expect spectacular new creatures in the volcanic biome and high-stakes emotional storytelling – Cameron has teased that the film made even his toughest critic (his wife) cry for hours. With two more sequels planned, Fire and Ashwill both stand on its own and set the stage for future chapters.
Release Date: December 19, 2025 (after a one-year delay from 2024). This will be the big holiday blockbuster of 2025.
Cast & Director: Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña return as Jake and Neytiri, alongside Sigourney Weaver (Kiri) and Stephen Lang (Quaritch, who remains a recombinant Na’vi avatar). Kate Winslet will likely appear again as Ronal, and Cliff Curtis as Tonowari – though the focus shifts to the new Ash tribe. New cast members include Oona Chaplin as Varang, the leader of the Ash People (her role was confirmed and she’s described as a key figure in this film). Of course, James Cameron is directing once more – bringing his unparalleled world-building and cutting-edge visual effects to life. Filming for Avatar 3 (and parts of 4) was actually completed back in 2020, with additional scenes shot in 2024, so Cameron has had ample time to perfect the extensive CGI.
But wait. There’s more.
How to Train Your Dragon – June 2025 (Universal Pictures)
Synopsis: The beloved DreamWorks franchise makes its live-action debut in 2025. How to Train Your Dragon retells the origin story of Hiccup and Toothless, a young Viking and his unlikely bond with a fearsome Night Fury dragon. Set in the village of Berk, this reimagined fantasy tale explores themes of friendship, courage, and challenging tradition. Expect new visual grandeur and emotional depth as the live-action adaptation brings the franchise’s rich world and flying sequences to life for a new generation.

This retelling promises vibrant visuals, heartfelt storytelling, and a fresh look at a beloved classic.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – May 2025
Synopsis: Ethan Hunt returns in the eighth installment of the franchise, facing his most perilous mission yet. This time, the IMF team must prevent a rogue AI known as “The Entity” from unleashing global chaos. The film promises high-octane action, including Cruise performing stunts like wing-walking on a 1940s biplane flying at over 120 mph and a submerged submarine sequence shot in a rotatable tank.
Release Date: May 23, 2025
Cast and Director: Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and featuring Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Angela Bassett, and Nick Offerman.
