Is Fantastic Four: First Steps a Standalone Marvel Adventure?

    TL;DR

Fantastic Four: First Steps is Marvel’s boldest departure from its interconnected storytelling yet. Set in an alternate, retro-futuristic 1960s with no other superheroes in sight, the film tells a self-contained story that skips the origin and focuses on family, imagination, and sci-fi spectacle. No Iron Man cameos. No multiverse gimmicks. Just the Fantastic Four, reimagined for a whole new cinematic space.

    It’s Its Own Universe—Literally

Unlike most Marvel films that drop characters into a crowded cinematic playground, Fantastic Four: First Steps is designed to be completely standalone. Director Matt Shakman confirmed that “we are our own universe,” and that the film features no cameos, Easter eggs, or references to the broader MCU. “There’s no running into Iron Man or whatever,” Shakman said. “They’re it.”

This deliberate isolation gives the film room to breathe—and makes it one of the most unique entries Marvel has ever produced.

A Stylized 1960s Space Race Vibe

The setting? A wildly imaginative version of the 1960s inspired by Cold War-era optimism and space-age futurism. Shakman told Empire the movie is shaped by the spirit of the Space Race and draws visual inspiration from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. That means practical sets, miniatures, and retro design cues—not just CGI overload.

This era-specific approach not only makes the world feel distinct, but it also separates the Four from the usual high-tech modern-day Marvel trappings.

    No Origin Story, No Problem

We’re not getting another origin story this time around—and that’s by design. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Shakman said, “One of the things we decided early on was not to do an origin story.” Instead, the film will pick up after the team’s transformation, allowing more time to focus on character dynamics and world-building.

    The Power of Found Family

According to star Paul Walter Hauser, who plays a still-secret role, the movie will emphasize emotional connection. “[It’s] a smart, chic Marvel movie that really focuses on family as part of the theme,” he told ComicBookMovie.

That means this won’t just be about cosmic rays and epic fights—it’ll also be about what holds these four very different people together.

    Standalone—But Not Forever

While this Fantastic Four movie is designed to stand on its own, don’t get too comfortable. The cast—including Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm)—will return in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026. Marvel’s long game is still in play—but they’re letting the Fantastic Four have their moment first.
