Nintendo’s Switch 2 Gets Delayed and Price Increase Possible with New Tariffs

Planning to snag the Nintendo Switch 2 when it launches this June? Better check your wallet again. Thanks to a new round of tariffs introduced under Donald Trump’s trade agenda, the $449.99 price tag for Nintendo’s next-gen console might soon be a distant memory. If these tariffs stick, U.S. buyers could end up paying as much as $670 for a Switch 2—according to analysts.

The problem? Nintendo manufactures most of its consoles in Vietnam and Cambodia—two countries now slapped with import tariffs of 46% to 49%. That puts the Switch 2 in a tight spot, especially since accessories and even games aren’t immune. One example: Mario Kart World, which currently lists for $79.99, could hit $117 with the added import costs. That’s a lot of coins, even for Mario.

Preorders for the Switch 2 were originally slated to go live in the U.S. on April 9, but Nintendo hit the brakes, choosing to “re-evaluate market conditions” before opening up orders—a move confirmed by PCMag. For now, the June 5 release date stands, but how much you’ll pay when that day comes is still up in the air.

Nintendo’s not totally caught off guard, though. According to analyst David Gibson, they’ve been quietly importing consoles into the U.S. since early 2025—nearly 400,000 units from Vietnam in just five days this January. That could mean early inventory avoids the worst of the price spike—but it won’t last forever.

So if you’re eyeing a Switch 2 this summer, don’t delay once preorders open. Otherwise, you might find yourself paying luxury console prices for what’s supposed to be a family-friendly favorite.
