Don’t you forget about one of the 1980s’ most iconic teen films: The Breakfast Club (1985) is heading back to theaters for its 40th anniversary. Universal Pictures has announced a special limited engagement, with the generation-defining coming-of-age story set to play on the big screen again for two days only, September 7 and 10, 2025. This theatrical re-release invites longtime fans and new audiences alike to experience the beloved movie in cinemas nationwide – just in time for the back-to-school season. So grab your walkman (or modern equivalent. Yeah–you can still buy one) and head to the theaters.

    A Generation-Defining Teen Classic from 1985

    The Breakfast Club Cast

Released in February 1985, The Breakfast Club broke new ground by portraying the teenage experience with uncommon honesty and emotional depth. The film follows five high school students from different cliques – “a brain, a jock, a princess, a basket case, and a criminal” – who spend a Saturday in detention together, only to realize they have more in common than they thought. Written and directed by John Hughes (in only his second directorial effort after Sixteen Candles), the movie was produced on a $1 million budget and went on to earn over $50 million.

The film transformed the landscape of teen cinema: it launched the careers of stars Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, and Emilio Estevez, ushered in the “Brat Pack” era, and struck a generational chord with its portrayal of alienation, identity and the desire to be seen.

Its impact has proven enduring: critics praised its authentic dialogue, Entertainment Weekly ranked it the #1 high school film of all time , and in 2016, the Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry. The closing anthem, Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts and remains instantly associated with the film.

40th Anniversary Screenings: When, Where, and What to Expect

To celebrate, Universal is bringing The Breakfast Club back to theaters nationwide for September 7 and 10, 2025. Tickets went on sale August 16 via Fandango and participating theater chains. Screenings are set at major chains like AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark, and Marcus Theatres as well as many independents.

    Key details:

    • Dates: Sunday, Sept. 7 & Wed., Sept. 10
    • Locations: Nationwide at major and independent theaters
    • Tickets: On sale now at Fandango and box offices
    • Presentation: Original 97-min theatrical version, rated R

Universal timed the release with back-to-school season , making it the perfect moment to revisit Shermer High School’s library.

    Cast Reunion and Reflections

Earlier this year, the film’s stars reunited at C2E2 in Chicago for a 40th anniversary panel. “I feel really very emotional and moved to have us all together,” Ringwald said . Estevez, who had avoided past reunions, admitted “this one felt special… the 40th anniversary, and it just felt like it was time”.

Jim Orr, Universal’s President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, praised the film’s timelessness:“The film’s honesty, humor, and humanity continue to connect with audiences of all ages. We’re honored to bring it back to theaters so that a new generation can experience its power on the big screen.”

A Criterion Collection 40th Anniversary edition is also planned, with a 4K restoration and new bonus content.
