We’ve been spoiled lately. Two incredible Silent Hill games back-to-back within a year? It’s official: the Konami comeback is real.
The Foundation: Silent Hill 2 Remake
The renaissance started with the Silent Hill 2 remake, which proved Konami could handle its legacy with care. The fans loved it, and the industry noticed—it took home the Chainsaw Award for Best Video Game at the 2025 Fangoria ceremony. It set the stage for something even more daring.
The New Nightmare: Silent Hill f
Released on September 24, 2025, Silent Hill f is a total departure for the series. Instead of the classic Maine town, we’re in 1960s rural Japan in the fictional village of Ebisugaoka.
- The Story: We follow Hinako Shimizu, a high school student trapped in a town consumed by a terrifying fungal invasion. The “fog” here is replaced by red spider lilies and streams of rot that turn the environment into a beautiful, overgrown monstrosity.
- The Writer: The script was penned by Ryukishi07, the legend behind When They Cry. He uses the horror to explore heavy themes like gender roles, the weight of societal expectations, and the “erasure of self” that came with traditional marriage in that era.
A True “Return to Form”
What makes Silent Hill f feel like a classic is its refusal to be an action-hero power fantasy.
- Combat: It’s intentionally “clunky” and slow. Hinako fights with pipes and bats like a scared teenager, not a trained soldier. Managing stamina and sanity is a constant struggle, making the claustrophobic levels genuinely scary.
- Awards: The game dominated The Horror Game Awards 2025, winning Game of the Year, Best Narrative, and Best Performance for Konatsu Kato.
The Narrative Loop
One of the coolest features is the game’s “loop” structure. Your first playthrough ends in a fixed conclusion called “Coming Home to Roost,” which reveals a shocking twist about Hinako’s reality. To see the full story, you have to play through New Game+ and NG++.
The Five Endings:
- Coming Home to Roost: The mandatory first ending; reveals the psychological “truth”.
- Fox’s Wedding: A dark ending where Hinako submits to her fate.
- The Fox Wets Its Tail: A “good” ending for Hinako and her friend Shu, but at a cost to the town.
- Ebisugaoka in Silence: The “True Ending” unlocked after multiple runs where the curse is finally lifted.
- The Great Space Invasion!: The classic, campy UFO joke ending.
Subsequent runs feature different story scenes and even unique bosses, keeping the experience fresh until you uncover the full mystery.
Konami is back, and the future of psychological horror has never looked better.
