The Nintendo Switch 2: A Notable Jump in Tech and Price

Nintendo Switch 2: Bigger Screen, Smarter Features, and a Price Bump

Nintendo has officially unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2, set for release on June 5, 2025, with a starting price of $449.99. This long-awaited successor brings several significant upgrades, including a larger 7.9-inch 1080p LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 256GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD Express), and a big bump in processing power.

Among the most talked-about features are the redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers, which now attach magnetically and feature a new “C” button designed specifically for GameChat — Nintendo’s new social gaming voice and video platform. When docked, the Switch 2 supports 4K output, making it more competitive with modern consoles in the visual department.

    Marques Brownlee’s First Impressions

In his first impressions video, tech reviewer Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) praised the Switch 2’s upgraded hardware. He pointed out the major quality-of-life improvements, particularly the screen and GameChat functionality, which could help bring Nintendo’s famously siloed online experience into the modern age.

Brownlee noted that the magnetic Joy-Con 2 design feels sturdier than its predecessor and that the higher refresh rate on the handheld screen significantly enhances gameplay fluidity. The new GameChat feature, which supports voice and even video calls during gaming sessions, was highlighted as a major step forward for multiplayer and social engagement.

    But That Price Tag…

Despite all the upgrades, Brownlee didn’t hold back when discussing the price. At $449.99 — and up to $499.99 for bundles like the Mario Kart World edition — the Switch 2 marks a notable jump from the original model’s launch price. Brownlee speculates that the increase is due in part to tariffs and rising manufacturing costs, but he also questions whether the average Nintendo gamer will see enough value in the upgrades to justify the cost.

The handheld gaming market is becoming increasingly competitive, with devices like the Lenovo Legion Go offering compelling alternatives to the Nintendo Switch 2. The Legion Go features an 8.8-inch 2560×1600 display with a 144Hz refresh rate, an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, and 16GB of RAM, delivering robust performance in a portable form factor. Its detachable controllers and versatile kickstand enhance its adaptability for various gaming scenarios.

However, the Legion Go’s higher resolution screen can tax the integrated GPU, necessitating adjustments to game settings for optimal performance. Additionally, its larger size and weight may affect portability and comfort during extended gaming sessions.

In this evolving landscape, the Nintendo Switch 2 faces competition from devices like the Legion Go, which offer advanced hardware and features. Gamers now have a variety of options to consider, each with unique strengths and trade-offs, making the choice of handheld gaming device more personalized than ever.

    Worth the Hype?

The Nintendo Switch 2 looks like a thoughtfully upgraded hybrid console with meaningful improvements where it counts. Marques Brownlee’s breakdown suggests it’s a solid generational leap — but with a hefty “Nintendo tax” baked in. For diehard fans, the Switch 2 might be a no-brainer. For others, the price may give pause before hitting that preorder button.
