Assassin’s Creed Shadows: A Smash Hit Full of Controversy and Backlash

    TL;DR

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has received mostly favorable reviews for its lush depiction of feudal Japan and dual-protagonist structure, offering both stealth and samurai combat. Critics love the atmosphere and world-building, while fans are split over pacing issues and the inclusion of historical figure Yasuke. Controversies aside, the game is a commercial hit with millions of players in its first week.

Critics Praise the Setting, Question the Pacing

Critics have largely praised Assassin’s Creed Shadows for its gorgeous world-building and ambitious character duality. The Guardian called it “the most beautiful video game I have ever seen,” applauding its visual richness and immersive landscapes. The two protagonists—Yasuke, a powerhouse samurai, and Naoe, a stealthy shinobi—offer gameplay variety that critics feel helps revitalize the Assassin’s Creed formula.

Still, the game isn’t without its flaws. PC Gamer noted that Shadows fixes many of Valhalla’s mistakes, especially in terms of bloat, but still struggles with pacing and repetitive quest design. Meanwhile, Polygon critiqued the open world as being visually stunning but often “hollow,” citing long walks between objectives that lack meaningful interaction.

    The Yasuke Controversy

The inclusion of Yasuke—a real historical figure and a Black samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga—has ignited a wave of online discourse. Some fans claimed the character was “not historically accurate,” prompting accusations that Ubisoft was being “woke.” In response, TIME pointed out that Yasuke’s existence is well-documented, and many historians have since praised Ubisoft’s inclusion of him as both bold and historically grounded.

IGN’s Matt Kim also defended the choice, noting that it helps Shadows distinguish itself from other Japan-set games like Ghost of Tsushima, and gives players a new lens through which to view feudal Japan.

    Cultural Sensitivity Under Scrutiny

A scene involving Yasuke fighting in a sacred Shinto shrine sparked backlash in Japan, with some calling it culturally disrespectful. According to The Times, Japanese officials reached out to Ubisoft for clarification, reigniting ongoing debates around how developers portray real-world cultures in fictionalized settings.

    The Numbers Don’t Lie

Despite the controversies, the game is performing incredibly well. Ubisoft confirmed over one million players on day one, with that number climbing to over three million in the first week. That’s a much-needed win for a company that, as Reuters, reported earlier this year, was banking heavily on Shadows after a rocky financial period.

    Final Verdict

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is beautiful, bold, and narratively rich—but not without baggage. Its attempt to merge real history with modern gameplay sensibilities has sparked meaningful conversations, if also some polarized reactions. Whether you’re here for the stunning scenery or to unpack the historical nuance, it’s safe to say Shadows is one of the most talked-about entries in the franchise in years.
