Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra: Fun or Flop?

This year brings yet another wave of Isekai to our door step, and has people wondering “should I even bother with this Isekai? Aren’t they all the same?”

In one sense, yes, and no. The cliche idea of a person being transported to another world is certainly nothing new, but when it crosses over with a strategy turn-based game, there is a certain je ne sai quois.

If you, like me, are entranced by strategy world building type games like Civilization, then perhaps you may enjoy Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra.

Detailed art and backgrounds along with an aura of darkness subvert the air from the beginning, though with constant humor jabbing at the protagonist, Takuto Ira, the air feels more comedic than dark. In this area I enjoy the play of dark, gruesome horror with a light overtone blending into a dark comedy.

The occasional foray into playing the big bad evil guy for sake of alignment, Ira contrasts his character with social ineptitude and finds himself in the daily struggles of running a growing magical kingdom from the ground up.

    Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra

    Pros

    1. The world building is surprisingly well done, including a rich mythology which slowly reveals itself in each passing episode.
    2. The protagonist doesn’t start overpowered, and must use his limited resources wisely, as is typical in strategy games, which makes his growth more realistic and relatable.
    3. For me, the political intrigue woven throughout is a big draw.

    Cons

    1. While much of the animation at the beginning was grand and well done, there come many instances where the style changes and seems sloppy, or hurried.
    2. Additionally, the pacing starts off quite slowly in which the character introductions are done and plot points revealed taking a whopping 4 to 5 episodes. Taking such a long exposition is, honestly, too slow even for me. (That is saying something as I enjoyed reading the Silmarillion.)
    3. While the main genre is based on a strategy game and empire building with political intrigue, the later episodes released tend to bend barriers into a harem building anime.

    Verdict

If you enjoy tactical isekai anime with a focus on world-building and political maneuvering, then Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra may be worth a watch. However, be prepared for animation hiccups and a slow-burn narrative which tends to not take itself too seriously. Time will tell how this isekai unfolds. As for me, I hope this course corrects back to the original concept of a kingdom builder with political intrigue and away from yet another harem.

My score is tentative based on potentialities of the future episodic course:

I am a renaissance sort of man, always dabbling and learning new hobbies, skills, interests and the like. When I am not working or with my wife and two kids, I enjoy relaxing with a good book, game or new show. Hobbies include foraging, writing, reading, gardening, learning new instruments (currently the ocarina), watching the latest anime and finding quality board games.
