Around 9:30 am EST on June 12, 2026, Facebook started having issues. By 10:00 am, it became catastrophic. Users were logged out, given a “session expired” message, and were unable to log back in.
But it wasn’t just Facebook. All Meta services including Messenger, Threads and Instagram went down for the count. For almost an hour-and-a-half, users couldn’t access Meta-operated sites and apps or had limited functionality.
Why did Facebook go down?

Meta’s official statement from spokesperson Andy Stone only confirmed it was a generalĀ “technical issue”. Hopefully that incredibly vague statement isn’t some kind of coverup for a data breach. But for now it appears to be nothing to worry about.
Was the rest of the internet affected?

Fortunately no, it was not.
Unlike previous outages like the Cloudflare or Google Cloud incidents, which caused issues for a massive number of websites and apps that rely on those servers, Facebook operates its own dedicated delivery network. The outage may have cost Facebook millions in ad revenue, but the rest of the internet is safe and sound, for now.
